What’s more trustworthy: your head or your heart?
The heart, what a wonderful piece of work! Our heart is the center of our health. It is the pump that delivers life to our most valued asset, our body. The heart however is more than a physical organ that allows us to live; it is also the centerpiece of who we are. It is said that when we interact with each other as human beings we are subject to three basic elements of human nature. These are opinions, beliefs and values. Opinions are ideas that we hold within our brain and can be easily changed. How many times have we formed an opinion of someone before really knowing him or her? We don’t think we will like something based on what someone has told us. We learn our opinion was wrong. Beliefs are judgments we’ve made, an attitude of acceptance. Beliefs can be changed but not as easily as opinions. For centuries we believed the earth was flat, but that belief was changed when our forefathers explored the world and found it was round. Values however are who we really are. They are the principles by which we live and the character within us, deep in our heart. I have heard it said many times that he or she has a good heart. Everyone I have ever known that “has a good heart” possesses within them values of life. Values such as honesty, integrity, dignity for life, respect and consideration for their fellow people, the value of peace on earth and caring for our world and environment. Beliefs and opinions come from the brain, values come from the heart. So you ask, what’s more trustworthy, our head or our heart? I believe it is our heart. Our heart will rarely betray who we are, good or bad. Our heart is what and who we really are. So I trust the heart of people and it is the heart of people that will ensure the survival of civilization.
